I'm an Artificial Intelligence Ethicist
Dr. Chrissann Ruehle

Generative AI is the buzz right now. Every time one tunes in to watch the news or visit a news website, it seems as though there is a story about Generative AI. ChatGPT, GPT-4, Bard, and Claude are large language models that have had a significant impact on society and various industries. From healthcare and education to finance and marketing, and other industries, these tools have transformed the way we interact with technology and improved productivity and customer experiences. My research, consulting, and training focuses on the ethical issues like transparency, fairness, bias, privacy, explainability, and trust for these technologies.

About Me

Artificial Intelligence & Machine Learning Researcher, Consultant, Strategist, Educator

What led you to study Artificial Intelligence ethics?

I worked in industry for 19 years before transitioning to higher education. During my time in industry, I spent nearly a decade as a Senior Management Consultant at a company that sold Decision Support Services to hospitals and healthcare systems. At the time, we referred to the technology as Decision Support Services, but today it would be classified as Artificial Intelligence (AI).

I always enjoyed working with this technology because it empowered managers to make data-driven decisions about equipment maintenance, labor efficiency, order and production planning, and shipping, billing, and receiving functions. This experience stayed with me even after I transitioned into academia, where I taught and enjoyed many business and organizational ethics courses.

A few years later, I decided to pursue a Doctor of Business Administration degree at the University of South Florida in Tampa. When it came time to select a topic for my dissertation, I thought about my two interests: cognitive technologies and ethics. I decided to combine these two topics and landed on “Understanding the ethical landscape of Artificial Intelligence adoptions” in 2020. I had a hunch that this would be an important topic, and it turns out that I was correct. Today, AI ethics is a very salient and relevant topic.

As a follow-up to my dissertation, I published an article on the AI Industry for the Muma Business Review. Then, I worked on preparing a variety of articles focusing on AI ethics, chatbots and virtual agents ethics, AI and Blockchain technologies, along with other articles, which are currently undergoing peer review with well respected academic journals. The doctoral work has served as the foundation for building a strong research pipeline in a very active research space.
